57-mm Mk 3 in series of highly successful
tests at Dahlgrens
United Defense
Industries, Inc. (NYSE:UDI) announced today that U.S. live
fire qualification testing of the 57-mm Mk 3 naval gun and
associated 3P (Pre-fragmented Programmable Proximity fuzed)
ammunition built by its Swedish subsidiary, Bofors Defence, began
with a series of highly successful tests at the Naval Surface
Warfare Center, Dahlgren, Va. Division.
Following the
recent Deepwater Program selection of the Mk3 gun system
for use aboard the U.S. Coast Guard's (USCG) new National Security
Cutter, the Navy has requested the gun system be designated as the
EX 110 Mod 0.
"The USCG Deepwater Gun
System qualification project team successfully fired 29
practice rounds and 26 rounds of 3P service ammunition at the
Dahlgren Main Range test," said Norm Scott, United Defense's
Dahlgren site manager and company support lead for the Government's
gun and ammunition tests.
The initial test firings
were conducted to verify the test range instrumentation and
to document the gun system's characteristics for the upcoming Test
Readiness Review of the EX 110 Mod 0 gun safety qualification
project.
Firing tests of both the gun and
ammunition are expected to continue well into 2004. In
2003, the gun system completed a logistics demonstration of the
operational and maintenance characteristics of the gun, and an
engineering assessment of the gun focused on its ability to meet
U.S. requirements.
These tests were conducted at
the United Defense facility in Louisville, Kentucky, using
a Bofors Mk 3/57-mm Gun Mount provided by United Defense which was
then installed at the Dahlgren facility for the aforementioned
testing.
In order to support the gun and
ammunition
testing, the Navy purchased Bofors 57-mm 3P and Target Practice ammunition.
This marks the first purchase of the Bofors 3P ammunition by the
U.S. armed forces.
